The Hayward Eden Area Resilience Collaborative is a joint effort to safeguard the shorelines of Hayward, San Leandro, and San Lorenzo – a vital landscape of tidal marshes, trails, and wildlife that shields nearby neighborhoods and infrastructure from flooding.
Facing up to three feet of projected sea level rise, the Collaborative is pioneering nature-based solutions like horizontal (“living”) levees that combine flood protection with habitat restoration, water quality improvement, and public recreation. Through the HASPA Shoreline Adaptation Implementation Plan, the First Mile Horizontal Levee, and the Hayward Nature-Based Solutions Project, local agencies and community partners are creating a unified, innovative model for climate adaptation that enhances resilience while restoring the Bay’s natural ecosystems.
Plantify's Role Plantify is proud to serve as a community engagement partner for the Hayward Eden Area Resilience Collaborative.
Our role is to help connect local residents, families, and youth to the shoreline through accessible, place-based education and community engagement. We are coordinating with other consultants and partners working on community and Tribal engagement efforts, while also developing open-source educational materials focused on the First Mile Horizontal Levee and the broader Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency (HASPA). As part of this work, Plantify is creating native plant and shoreline education resources, hosting community walks and workshops, and helping residents better understand how nature-based shoreline adaptation can benefit both people and the environment.

Plantify’s Shoreline Field Guide is an introductory resource to the native plants and shorebirds found along the Hayward shoreline.
This trifold guide was developed as part of our educational work around the First Mile Horizontal Levee and is designed to be free, accessible, and easy to use for families, students, educators, and community members. We are grateful for the input and support of our partners at East Bay Regional Parks, the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, as well as the guidance from the San Francisco Estuary Partnership and the East Bay Dischargers Authority.
