Plantify Kokedama Kit

'Koke' in Japanese means 'moss,' and 'dama' means 'ball'. If you put these two words together, you get 'moss-ball' plant. The origin of Kokedama (苔玉) is believed to have started sometime during the Tokugawa Period of Japan (1603-1868) as a way for the commoners to enjoy bonsai without expensive tools and containers.

This period was known as a time of peace and cultural growth. Artisans became important producers of new forms of visual and material culture. Kokedama making is a practice similar to bonsai, and inspires a meditative approach to understanding plants on a deeper level.

We have started our biophilic product line with kokedamas because of its natural composition. However, that in itself does not make a product biophilic. We have assessed and selected the various materials that go into this product; examining the product's life cycle (cradle-to-grave). Being mindful of nature and sourcing of eco-friendly materials, aligns with our ethos as an environmentally conscious organization.

Some of the new materials in our craft kit:
  • sustainably procured moss (1% for the Planet Member)
  • certified compostable resealable bags (BPI® certified) - for our in-house soil mixes
  • certified compostable natural fiber molding bowl (BPI® certified)
  • recyclable or eco-friendly packaging
  • thermal printed labels
  • compostable display dish made from rice hulls (certified climate neutral)
  • recycled paper for layering materials

We order/pickup all materials in bulk for carbon offsetting. We are also actively planting and growing native plants with our partners to reach a carbon net negative impact.

Our Favorite Plants

Our kits don't come with a plant because this is a craft kit. We don't want to limit your creativity and we encourage you to find the perfect plant that fits your needs while appealing to your personality, tastes and style!

But here are some of our favorites...

Parlor Palm

Native to Southern Mexico and Guatemala

One of the most resilient palms. This plant looks like a miniature grove of bamboo with its beautiful, thin stalk. Though rare, the parlor palm can fruit.

Dragon Tree - Janet Craig

Native to Madagascar and other Indian Ocean
islands.

Part of the dragon tree family, the thin trunk and
vibrant, glossy leaves makes this an alluring beauty.

Snake Plant

Native to Tropical West Africa and Congo.

The Snake Plant, also known as 'Mother-in-Law's
Tongue,' is an admired indoor plant, because of how
effective this plant removes carbon dioxide in the air
at night and releases oxygen.

Peace Lily

Native to tropical Americas and Southeastern Asia.

This tropical plant not only neutralizes toxic gases and
oxygenates the air, but is incredibly resilient. The
peace lily will flop over, letting you know its thirsty,
and typically blossoms in spring.
